Chatting

Setup your Microphone

Before you can use the audio chatting features, you may need to configure the computer's microphone. If you have Windows XP, the easiest way to setup your microphone is to go to the windows volume control window. To do this:

  1. Press WindowsKey+R to bring up the run dialog box.
  2. Type "sndvol32" and press enter.

Tab through this area until you get to your microphone. If your microphone's sound is, too low you can use either the arrow keys or the page up or page down keys to adjust the microphone's volume. Generally a good setting is around 80%, but if your microphone is very low sounding, you may need to set this to 100%. If your microphone has an advanced button near it, then you can try adjusting some of the settings to try to improve the audio quality of your voice. When you are finished press enter, and then close the volume control dialog box.

If you are using windows vista, setting up your microphone is somewhat easier.

  1. Go to the start menu and type the letters spe.
  2. Arrow down until you get to "Speech Recognition options" and press enter.
  3. Tab until you get to "setup Microphone" and press enter.
  4. Choose the type of microphone you are using by pressing the up or down arrow keys, then tap enter.
  5. After the instructions for proper Microphone placement are read, press enter on the next button.

At this point, you can speak into the microphone, and the computer will automatically adjust the volume. Either wait until you hear the finish button pop up, or tab to the next button, and tap enter, then tap enter again on the finish button. Now you can close all opened windows, and you should be ready to chat, or record voice messages via your voice.

What's Chatting Like?

Within the System Access Mobile Network, you have access to chat rooms. These are virtual rooms that you and your friend, or friends can go and talk to one another. You speak by holding down a key on the keyboard and talking while the key is held down. This chat system works just like a walky-talky! The great thing about it is that distance is no obstacle. You can hear who's in the room with you, and find out who's talking at a given moment.
