What is a web site?

To imagine what a web site is, and what exactly it can entail, imagine that you are window-shopping. As you walk by a store, you can hear music, and various objects, and activities. If you can see, you could see pictures, videos, people, and objects to buy, etc. In this example, the web site would be the store itself, and the home page would be the picture window. That is the area of a web site that first catches someone's eye, or ear, or even a nose. Once you move closes to that store you can interact with the people, and objects within. Up until now, if you wanted to create a web site, you needed to learn a computerized shorthand called HTML, or learn specialized software. The SA Mobile Network has removed those barriers. Now anyone regardless of software or computer experience can create web sites that can be shared with the world. Like blogs, your web Site is a doorway into your particular interests. Read on to learn how easily the SA Mobile Network can help you create your web site.

My Web Site

When you go into My Web Site for the first time, from SA Mobile Network Home, you will be asked for the title of your web site. This is important. This is the larger than life banner on that picture window, or the enticing video, or music that you may see and hear at a storefront. The title is also, what gets saved if someone adds the web site to his or her bookmarks. So make the title unique, and tailor it to your specific tastes. The title text box can accept HTML if you wish to use it's capabilities.

If you want a link to your public bookmarks to show up on your web site, just make sure you check the, “Include a link to my public bookmarks” check box.

Similarly if you want a link to your public news interests, just put a check in, Include a link to my public news interests” check box.

How would you like your Blog displayed?

This question presents a list box of possible choices of how you would like your Blog to be displayed. Your choices are:

Home Page footer, Optional

This is an optional text box that you can put anything you want, including HTML. Because this is a footer, a block of text that is at the very bottom of the page, you should not type a large amount of text here. Some web site authors opt to enter the date in which the page was last updated.

When you are done, just move to the “save changes” button.

The next page will show your public web address. You can feel free to give this web address out to anyone, or even enter your web address as your e-mail's signature. This way anyone you email will have ready access to your web site! Your web sites address will look something like this: http://samobile.net/users/JoeB/ .

You can now add an introduction to your web site by activating the Edit introduction link, which allows you to make changes to your existing introduction, or you can wipe out your introduction and start a new introduction by activating the replace introduction link. Your introduction can include text, HTML, and audio. You can also browse other SA Mobile Network members' web sites by activating the browse other personal web sites link.

Note, the HTML tutorial offered here is entitled "HTML - The Basics of Web Page Design", and points to "Access Technology Institute" . The URL to the first lesson of the HTML Guide is: http://www.accesstechnologyinstitute.com/catalog/Samples/HTML/html01.html

Upload a Picture for the Home Page

Want to put a picture of yourself or your family on your web site? No problem! In the My Web Site section, just choose to upload a picture for the home page. From there, first press the Browse button and select the file you want to upload. Then enter a caption for that picture in the next edit box, and press the Upload button to finish the process. Uploading a picture may take a little while, so you can Alt+Tab to another window and work on something else while you wait.

Manage My Pictures

In addition to the picture on the home page, your web site can have a gallery of pictures, optionally arranged into folders. To do this, follow the Manage My Pictures link in the My Web Site section. Uploading a picture for the gallery is very similar to uploading a picture for your home page. Managing pictures in the gallery is like managing bookmarks. You can create folders, move folders and pictures around to your liking, rename folders, edit the captions of your pictures, and delete folders or pictures. Visitors to your web site will see a small version of each picture, called a thumbnail. When they move the mouse over the thumbnail, the caption will pop up, and they can click the thumbnail to view the full-size picture in a new window.
